- Netflix has dynamically optimized all of its HDR video streaming.
- HDR-VMAF, a metric for measuring the perceptual quality of HDR video, was developed internally and allows for the creation of HDR streams with dynamic optimization.
- The migration from fixed bitrates to dynamically optimized encodes has resulted in 40% fewer rebuffers, higher video quality, lower initial bitrate, lower play delay, and less variation in delivered video quality.
- The optimized encodes are shot-based and align IDR frames with shot boundaries.
- The improvements are beneficial for both bandwidth-constrained and unconstrained sessions, and also lower internet data usage, particularly on mobile and tablets.
- HDR-VMAF may potentially be open-source in the future.
