For the Love of Code: a summer hackathon for joyful, ridiculous, and wildly creative projects
This is a global, summer-long hackathon for developers to build projects they've been thinking about but haven't had a reason to start. Participants can work solo, with friends, or alongside GitHub Copilot to create web apps, CLI tools, games, AI explorations, or creative experiments. The focus is on building for the fun of it, with prizes including internet immortality, GitHub Copilot Pro+ subscriptions, and glory. The real prize, however, is the joy of working on something you love.
What you could win
Top entries will be featured on the GitHub blog, winners in each category will receive 12 months of GitHub Copilot Pro+, and participants will enjoy glory, vibes, and an excellent excuse to finally bring their ideas to life.
Ideas for projects
- An agent that reviews PRs with a sarcastic senior dev, overly nice intern, or concerned parent persona.
- An AI-assisted app for splitting restaurant bills.
- A Shania Twain Slack or Discord bot for inspiration.
Interactive experiences
This category is for prototyping game ideas, remixing mechanics, or mashing up genres to create engaging interactive experiences.
Ask GitHub Copilot!
GitHub Copilot is not just for autocomplete; it can brainstorm ideas, explain code, and more. Participants can ask it for fun and creative coding projects or help with creating unique Git hooks.
Standout projects utilizing Copilot
Projects that make creative use of Copilot, including Agent mode, may be featured. The hackathon is open to anyone interested in coding, from beginners to experienced developers.
How to join
Participants can continue working on projects after the hackathon ends, but judging will be based on the state of the project as of 11:59 p.m. AoE on September 22. Updates are allowed as long as the final version is submitted by the deadline.
