Transferring Figma files to After Effects

  • Transferring Figma files to After Effects: Unfortunately, there is no direct way to import SVG files from Figma into After Effects. However, you can export Figma files as SVGs, organize the layers in Illustrator, and then import the Illustrator file into After Effects for animation.

  • Exporting Figma files as SVGs: In Figma, select and group the layers you want to animate, and then export them as an Illustrator file (.ai). Make sure to organize the layers in Illustrator by creating new layers and dragging the content you need onto each layer.

  • Organizing and preparing layers for animation: Once you import the Illustrator file into After Effects, you can proceed with animating each layer separately. It's important to note that if you're creating a loop GIF, you can use effects in After Effects, but if you're creating an animated SVG, you cannot use effects.

  • Set up for Animated SVG: If you're exporting the animation as a Lottie file, you'll need to change the format within After Effects to retain the vector information from the Illustrator file. This will create a layer with all the shapes inside.

  • Understand the application of your animation: Consider the purpose of your animation, such as whether it involves conditions or if it can be created using vector animations. The example provided includes a walking cycle animation.

  • Exporting as GIF: If you're creating a GIF animation, you can use After Effects' Adobe Media Encoder to export it with better compression and results.

  • Example files: If you'd like to test out the example animation, there is a Google Drive link available with all the Illustrator and After Effects files used in the project.
